Each year, Bolius and Realdania publish an analysis on Danes’ relationship with the built environment. Many internal and external professionals, as well as journalists, request data extracts, which our data specialist has become a bottleneck in delivering.

Design a digital interface that allows users to find and cross-reference questions from the analysis and visualize the data as a graph.

As the sole UX/UI designer, I was responsible for the entire design process, which consisted of the following steps:

1. Research and uncovering user needs

Interview with the data manager at Videncentret Bolius to understand what the requests most often concern and how the data should be accessed correctly. This was followed by informal interviews with internal journalists and subject-matter experts about their needs.

2. Key design priorities

Based on the collected data, and in collaboration with developers and the project manager, I defined the overall functionality and requirements that were necessary. This included, among other things, a desktop-first approach, as the interface would primarily be used in work contexts and therefore on larger screens.

3. Design, iteration and implementation

Based on the list of functionality and requirements, I designed the product by:

  • Developing wireframes, which I validated with the developers to ensure technical feasibility.
  • Conducting user testing with internal and external journalists and adjusting the design based on feedback.
  • Designing the UI based on the design guidelines.
  • Handing over the design to the developers and continuously refining it during implementation.

The interface has resulted in faster workflows, as the data became more accessible to both internal and external users.

User testing showed that it was difficult to get started with the database. Therefore, I chose to highligth how to use the tool.

The survey contains more than 100 questions and background variables. Therefore, I chose to give users the option to both browse through overarching categories and search for specific questions.

As the target audience is not necessarily used to working with datasets, I chose to include a clear overview box showing which data has been selected and how it should be credited.
