Electricity prices right now

Brief

Design of an overview on bolius.dk showing electricity prices hour by hour for the next two days, including an indication of CO₂ emissions per kWh.

Results

  • Approximately 25,000 page views per week in the first half of 2025.
  • Approximately 4.8 million page views in total since October 2022, corresponding to about 9% of the total traffic on bolius.dk.

When the energy crisis broke out in 2022 and electricity prices rose to unprecedented levels, a financial incentive emerged for Danes to shift their electricity consumption. Videncentret Bolius wanted to capitalize on this relevance as quickly as possible. The goal was to:

  • help Danes use electricity at the cheapest times
  • promote more sustainable behaviour
  • drive continuous traffic to bolius.dk

Design an overview on a dedicated page on bolius.dk that shows electricity prices hour by hour for the next two days and indicates CO₂ emissions per kWh.

As the sole UX/UI designer, I was responsible for the entire design process, which consisted of the following steps:

1. Research and uncovering user needs

Because the deadline was short, I primarily conducted desk research and drew on internal knowledge. This included, among other things, a competitor analysis and interviews with internal subject-matter experts and colleagues.

2. Key design priorities

Based on the collected data, and in collaboration with developers and the project manager, I identified the functionality and requirements that were necessary and realistic in order to launch quickly.

3. Design, iteration and implementation

Based on the list of functionality and requirements, I designed the product by:

  • Developing wireframes, which I validated with the developers to ensure technical feasibility.
  • Conducting internal user testing and adjusting the design based on feedback.
  • Designing the UI in accordance with the design guidelines.
  • Handing over the design to the developers and continuously refining it during implementation.

Since its launch in October 2022, the product has generated:

  • Approximately 25,000 page views per week in the first half of 2025
  • Approximately 4.8 million page views in total, corresponding to about 9% of the total traffic on bolius.dk

The overview was designed to create a consistent experience across mobile and desktop.

It was a high priority to make the electricity prices easy to understand. Therefore, I chose to use colors, size, and numbers to display the hourly price.

CO₂ is very abstract for the average Dane, and at the same time our subject-matter experts assessed that CO₂ emissions cannot be considered “good.” Therefore, it was not appropriate to use color coding. Instead, I chose to show the average from the previous year so users had an indication of what constitutes high and low.
